Mining engineer and geologist. After graduating from the Mining and Forestry Academy in Banská Štiavnica he worked in Gmunden as mining probationer since 1847. In 1849, he started working as assistant in the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna. In 1867 he was appointed chief geologist, and in 1873 he became deputy director of the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna. F. Foetterle took credit for geological mapping of the Moravian and southern Polish regions which resulted in compilation of 2 geological maps at a scale of 1 : 288 000 'Geologische Karte der Markgrafschaft Mähren und des Herzogthums Schlesien', published in 1866. He participated in numerous studies and, at the same time, was in charge of the scientific supervision in 'Wernerův geologický spolek' (Wernerverrein - Werner´s Geological Society). He investigated mineral deposits, was involved in mining and also participated in organization of public work.
