Gümbel, Carl Wilhelm Ritter von Dr. Phil.
University professor, German geologist, and paleontologist. He studied mining at the Heidelberg University and natural science in Munich. In 1862, he earned the Ph.D.degree in Munich. Since 1863, he was a honorary professor at the University of Munich and the Bavarian public geologist. He held title of senior mining adviser, in 1868 he was assigned to a post of professor of geology at the College of Technology in Munich and the chairman of the Bavarian Supreme Mining Office. He was interested in geology and paleontology mainly of Bavaria, the Alps, and mining engineering. In paleontology, he studied fauna and flora. He published over two hundred papers of which the most important are 'Geognostische Beschreibung des bayerischen Alpengebirges und seines Vorlandes' (1861 - 18 79), 'Geognotische Beschreibung des Fichtelgebirges mit dem Frankenwalde, etc. ' (1879), 'Anleitung zur geologischen Beobachtung in den Alpen' (1879), 'Textur der Mineralkohlen' (1883), and many others. To appreciate his merits he became member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of London, and many other scientific institutions.
