Professor of the of the university in Prague, geologist and paleontologist of German origin. He studied at the universities in Prague and Munich, in 1866 he qualified as associate professor in geology at the College of Technology in Vienna and, in 1867, at the Vienna University. Between 1869 and 1870 he took part in the German polar expedition on the ship Hansa. He was assigned to a post of professor of mineralogy and geology at the German College of Technology in Prague in 1871 and, in 1876, as professor of geology and paleontology at Charles University in Prague. He devoted his time mainly to the studies of the Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary fauna. He was interested in geology of the Krušné hory Mountains and mineral springs of Bohemia. The results of his investigations were published in a number of geological and paleontological papers such as 'Die Fauna der Schichten von St. Cassian', 'Geologie des böhmischen Erzebirges,' 'Skizze der geologischen Verhältnisse des Mineralwassergebietes Böhmens', 'Ammoniten aus der böhmischen Kreide', 'Der geologische Aufbau von Böhmen', and many others.
