Geologist and paleontologist. After his studies at Polytechnic College in Prague he worked as metallurgical officer, and in 1838 as administrator at various locations (e.g., in Roztoky, Břasice and Nový Jáchymov). After his retirement he was involved in scientific studies related to geology and phytopaleontology. He dedicated his time to paleobotany of the Bohemian Silurian, Carboniferous and Permian systems, he was distinguished expert of that time namely in the Permian and Carboniferous. He was also interested in mineralogy and petrography and published a number of regional studies. Out of them the following are worth to mention: 'Kamenouhelné ložiště v okolí Radnic' (Coal field in the environs of Radnice), 'Beitrag zur fossilen Flora der böhmischen Steinkohlenbecken', 'Neue Fundorte von Steikohlenpflanzen in Böhmen', 'O útvaru kamenouhelném ve středních Čechách' (On the Carboniferous system in Central Bohemia), ' Über die normalen und abnormalen Gesteine des Silurgebirges von Mittelböhmen', 'O stupni primordiálním v Čechách' (On the Primordial Stage in Bohemia), 'Neue Fundorte von Mineralien in Böhmen', and many other geological and paleontological studies.
