Austrian geologist and paleontologist, teacher. He studied natural science at the universities of Graz and Vienna. After completing his studies he worked, in 1877 - 1833, as assistant professor at the Department of Paleontology of the Vienna University. In 1881, he qualified as associate professor in general paleontology at the same university. In the same year he joined the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna, first as volunteer, and then he worked there till 1890. In 1891, he was appointed adjunct professor and, in 1893, full professor of mineralogy and geology at the German College of Technology in Prague where he worked till 1900 when he was called to join the Department of Paleontology and later in 1901, also Dept. of Geology at the Vienna University where he stayed till his death. His main studies were devoted to geology of the Carpathians and eastern Alps and their nappe structure and to Jurassic system and its paleontology (mostly cephalopods and foraminifers). He published numerous papers and monographs of which the most notable is the 'Bau und Bild der Karpathen' (1903), where he explained the origin and tectonics of the entire Carpathians. This study is part of comprehensive monographs 'Bau und Bild Österreichs' and 'Über die Tektonik der Karpathen'. He also published large monograph on the Tatra Mountains 'Die Geologie des Tatragebirges' accompanied by detailed geological map. Paleontology is the major subject of the paper 'Die marinen Reiche des Jura und der Unterkreide'. The 'Entstehung der Alpen' deals with geology and origin of the Alps. He also revised the second edition of M. Neumayr´s 'Erdgeschichte' (1895) and published a number of other papers and monographs. He was founder of the Geological Society in Vienna and took active part in public life.
