Geologist. After school-leaving examinations he attended the German College of Technology in Brno, and later studied natural science at Charles University in Prague. His interest in geology was influenced mainly by his teacher J. Krejčí. Between 1888 and 1893 he was employed at the Museum of the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna and, for two years, he was trainee in the Museum of the Kingdom of Bohemia in Prague. Between 1895 and 1901 he was assistant professor at the Czech College of Technology in Prague working with professor A. Slavík. In 1901, he moved to Tišnov, where he made his living on writing for seven years. He was editor of the Moravian provincial magazine. Since 1909, he was probationer and since 1912 custodian in the Geological and Paleontological Department of the Moravian Provincial Museum in Brno where he rearranged and described most of the collected material. In 1910, he became associate professor of geology, paleontology and economic geology. He devoted his scientific studies mainly to the Moravian Tertiary and its paleontology, he was also interested in morphology and tectonics of the Moravian karst. He arranged bibliography of geological literature up to 1896. He participated in the popularization of natural science and translating.
