Geologist, paleontologist, archaeologist, and teacher. He studied natural science at the Vienna University. Since 1859, he taught at secondary schools in Prešov, Banská Štiavnica and Salzburg. In 1869 - 1893, he was teacher at high school in Vienna. In 1893, he was appointed professor of geology and paleontology at Charles University in Prague, and worked there till 1905. He was mainly interested in geology, paleontology, the Quaternary in particular, also paleoanthropology and archaeology. He became famous for his discoveries of Pleistocene fauna at Sudslavice near Volyně, in brickyards in the Prague environs, the Central Bohemian Paleozoic and in Moravian caves. He published a number of monographs including the three-volume textbook 'Všeobecná geologie se zvláštním zřetelem k zemím koruny české' (General Geology with special Reference to the Czech Lands). For secondary schools he wrote 'Rukověť zoologie'(Handbook of Zoology) and 'Tělověda člověka'(Somatology of Man). His merits in science and teaching were acknowledged by membership in many scientific institutions.
