born 4th November 1849, Arad (Transylvania, now Romania), died 13th May 1920, Balatonfüred (Hungary)

Hungarian geographer, geologist, and paleontologist, university professor. He completed his studies in 1874 at the Polytechnic College in Zürich. He devoted his time to the study of geography and geology and became professor of geography at the University of Budapest. In 1908 - 1920 he was in charge of the Hungarian Royal Geological Institute in Budapest. He took part in the Széchényi’s scientific expedition to China, Japan, India and Java. About this journey he wrote travel books and geological essays. His activities included physical geography, geology, and in particular the stratigraphy and paleontology. He wrote about geology of China and Hungary. He also described Chinese fossil mammals and vertebrates of Hungary. During the last years of his life he was interested in geology of the Balaton lake and its environs. He published over 150 scientific papers and as the director of the Hungarian Royal Geological contributed significantly to the organization of geological survey and investigation of Hungary, part of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.
