Gesell, Alexander born 8th May 1839, Bratislava, died 17th November 1919, Banská Bystrica Slovak geologist. He graduated from the Mining and Forestry Academy in Banská Štiavnica in 1862. He completed his professional training at the Imperial Geological Institute and at the Vienna University in the years 1864 - 1867. Within the project aimed at the preservation of mines in Banská Štiavnica he compiled in 1883, together with L. Csehe and J. Szabó, a map of ore veins of the Banská Štiavnica ore district and later even a colored geological map of the same area. In Slovakia he studied geology of the Kremnické vrchy Hills, the environs of Dobšiná, opal mines at Červenica and antimony mineralization in L´ubel. He also investigated lignite deposits and peat bogs in the Orava region and geology of salt deposits near Prešov. He published about 50 papers. He is a celebrity in coal geology, metallurgy, and general geology, particularly in Slovakia.
