Hungarian geologist. In 1837 - 1841, he studied philosophy and law at the University of Budapest, later he studied mining at the Mining and Forestry Academy in Banská Štiavnica. In 1850, he was adjunct professor at the Budapest University. Between 1855 and 1860 he taught at the public secondary school in Buda (Budapest) , in 1858 at Commercial College and, since 1860, at the university. In 1858, he became member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and South America. He was interested in mineralogy, petrography, geology, chemistry, hydrogeology, and economic geology. He wrote a paper 'Geologický opis okolia Banskej Štiavnice' (Geological Description of the Environs of Banská Štiavnica) important for Slovakia and carried out investigations in the area of the Slovenské rudohoří Mountains and Slánské vrchy Hills. He published more than 100 papers. He was member of many scientific institutions and societies. Between 1883 and 1884, he was rector of the Budapest University . He was awarded honorary doctorate in Edinburgh and Bologna. In 1968, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the Szabó rock. The Hungarian Geological Society awards every three years the Szabó prize for outstanding geological studies.
