Mineralogist, geologist, and teacher. In 1807 - 1815, he studied at the Faculty of Arts of the Prague University, and chemistry at the College of Technology in Prague. In 1819, he became superintendent at the Department of Chemistry of the College of Technology and started his scientific studies at Patriotic Museum in Prague where he collaborated with K. Sternberg. Since 1822, he lectured in mineralogy and geology at the College of Technology in Prague. In 1824, he was appointed custodian of the mineralogical collections which he improved significantly to match up to international standards, devoting his time especially to the Czech rocks and minerals. He worked there till 1849. Since 1835, he was professor of natural history and merchandise at the College of Technology in Prague. When the Academy of Sciences was founded in Vienna in 1847, he was appointed its member. In 1849, he became the first principal of the mining school at Příbram, later changed for Mining Academy, where he was rector until 1905, when he was appointed professor of mineralogy at the Vienna University where he worked until his death. He published the first systematic review of mineralogy and geology of Bohemia. He compiled and published geological map of Bohemia, described geology and geography of individual regions in J. G.Sommer’s “Königreich Böhmen”. He wrote numerous popularizing articles in various journals and textbook on natural history for secondary schools.
