Mineralogist, geologist and mining engineer. After attending the Polytechnic College in Prague he studied in Banská Štiavnica at the Mining and Forestry Academy. In 1857, he was mining engineer in the Příbram mines where an important deposit of silver and lead was being exploited at that time. From 1863 to 1864 he worked at the Imperial Geological Institute together with F. Pošepný. W. Haidinger, in those days the director of the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna, assigned him to a post of corresponding member of the Institute. Within the framework of mapping projects of the Institute, Babánek participated in the mapping of the Váh river basin. From 1864 to 1881 he was the head of mine management of the Anna and Prokop shafts in Příbram. Besides these mining activities he was involved in mineralogical investigations of hydrothermal ore veins, mineralogy and history of exploitation of the nearby gold deposit in Jílové near Prague. He was active as mining engineer in the Příbram mines and, since 1881, as chairman of the mine management at Jáchymov. In 1891, he published the first geological map of the Jáchymov ore district. He retired honoured with the title of Senior Mining Counsellor (Oberbergrat).
