Geologist and paleontologist, professor. He studied at the German University in Prague and later became assistant of professor G. Laube. After short stays at the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna and at secondary school in Prague he qualified at the German University in Prague in 1912, and was appointed there as an adjunct professor (1923) and later full professor (1929) of paleontology. He was associate member of the State Geological Survey in Prague. He paid much attention to the studies of fossil foraminifers and Pleistocene vertebrates. He is the author of a large number of papers and monographs among which the following are most important: 'Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Wirbeltier - fauna des böhmischen Quartärs', 'Bibliographia Foraminiferum recentium et fossilium', 'Das erste Aufreten des Menschen auf der Erdoberfläche', 'Die fossilen Foraminiferen', 'Die fosilen Wirbeltierreste der palaeolitischen Station in Krumau', 'Kritische Uebersicht der Mikrofauna des Burdigals vom Jakowetz bei Mährisch - Ostrau', 'Neue Schildkrötenreste aus den tertriären Süsswassertonen von Preschen bei Bilin in Böhmen', 'Zur Altersfrage der Flyschbildungen im nordöstlichen Mähren', 'Geologische Wanderungen in der Umgebung von Prag'. He compiled and published a bibliography of geological and paleontological literature of the Czech Lands from 1929 to 1943 under the title 'Verzeichnis der geologisch - palaentologischen Literatur über das Gebiet von Böhmen, Mähren und Schlesien'.
