Project Description

The research area is situated in the central part of the West Mongol Altai Mountains in the SW of Mongolia in the Khovd Aimag approximately 110 km south of the town of Khovd. The relief is highly mountainous with the altitudes ranging between 1,150 and 3,650 m a.s.l., but majority of the territory is located at the altitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 m a.s.l.. The research area belongs to the Munkhkhairhan Somon (approx. 50 %), Manhan Somon (approx. 30 %) and Zereg Somon (approx. 20 %), situated 80-155 km from the town of Khovd.

The overall objectives of the proposed project are:

  1. compilation of 5 geological map sheets at the 1 : 50,000 scale,
  2. compilation of 5 geochemical anomaly maps at the 1 : 50,000 scale, complemented by the mineral occurrence maps,
  3. geological research including application of geochemical methods, along with interpretation of isotopic geochemical and geochronological data, and application of field geophysical methods,
  4. to strengthen the government capacity through capacity building of Mongolian cooperating specialists,
  5. to assess the mineral potential of the selected area.
