Jaroš, Zdeněk Dr.

born 14th April 1883, Rychnov nad Kněžnou, died 7th November 1945, Brno

Mineralogist, geologist, and teacher. Following his studies at the secondary school in Rychnov nad Kněžnou he started to study natural science at Charles University in Prague and, between 1906 and 1911, was assistant of professor F. Počta at the Department of Geology. Among his teachers and mentors were K. Vrba, F. Slavík, J. Woldřich, and F. Počta. He earned a Doctorate in philosophy in 1911, and since then he taught, with occasional breaks, natural science at the secondary school in Orlová, the region of Těšín. After the compulsory military service during the World War One he started working at the Provincial Museum in Brno. Till his death he worked there as curator and head of the Mineralogical and Geological Department. Regardless of numerous obstacles, especially during the German occupation, he managed to save mostly the Czech researchers in the museum and, thanks to him, the local mineralogical collections were enlarged considerably due to private collections of J. Bakeš, E. Burkart, B. Kučera, Melion´s collection, and others. His scientific activities included particularly mineralogy, geology and paleontology on which he wrote a number of monographs. His work for the Moravian Provincial Museum, which became an important center of mineralogical and geological research in Moravia, was of great importance.
