French paleontologist living in Prague, honorary member of the Club of Natural Science in Prague (Klub přírodovědecký, since 1883). A graduate of the Parisian École polytechnique (1819 - 1824), then he attended the School of Bridge and Road Constructions (École des ponts et chaussées). After his studies he became tutor of the grandson of the French king Charles X. Following the king´ s removal in 1830 he went with him into exile (Scotland, Bohemia). On recommendation of the earl Kašpar (Caspar) Sternberg he was in charge of the project of the railway construction between Prague and Pilsen. During surveying of the area he became strongly interested in paleontology and collecting of Paleozoic fossils in the area concerned. He began to publish the results of his extensive studies in ' Systeme silurien du Centre de la Boheme ' since 1852. By 1881, altogether 22 volumes were published, comprising approximately 6 000 pages and 1 160 lithographic panels. He bequeathed his collections to the National Museum. In honour of his achievements a part of the Central Bohemia (Proterozoic and Early Paleozoic) was named Barrandian and the new Prague district Barrandov.
