Austrian geologist and paleontologist, founder of paleobiology. After his studies in Vienna he worked at the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna between 1896 and 1907. He was founder and director of the Paleobiological Department of the Vienna University, the first research establishment of its kind. In 1900 he completed geological mapping on the sheet Hustopeče-Mikulov at a scale of 1 : 75 000. He investigated the Neogene of the northern part of the Vienna Basin and the Jurassic klippe, particularly in the Pavlovské vrchy Hills. His studies later formed an important basis for oil exploration in this area. Since 1917 he was appointed full professor of paleobiology and, between 1932 and 1933, rector of the Vienna University. In 1935, he was assigned to a post of the head of the Department of Paleontology at the University of Göttingen.
