German geologist and mining engineer. At first he studied philosophy and law at the University of Munich, later he switched to mining and metallurgy at the Mining Academy in Freiberg, Saxony. After graduation he was employed as metallurgist in the ironworks at Blansko, later in the rolling mill in Welten in the Ruhr region, and then he became the chief metallurgist of ironworks in Westphalia. In 1837, he was assigned to a post of director of the ironworks in Wolfsberg in Carinthia and, in 1839, he became the chief executive of the industrial complex in Těšín (ironworks, rolling mills and engineering works). His major scientific activities, based on his perfect knowledge of paleontology, included the study of stratigraphy of the Cretaceous in the Beskydy Mountains. In 1861, he completed and published geological map of the Moravskoslezské Beskydy Mountains with explanatory notes under the title 'Die geognostischen Verhältnisse der Nordkarpathen in Schlesien und der angrenzenden Theilen von Mähren und Galizien', which was of high quality and accuracy. He also published geological map of the environs of Krakow and the southern part of Galicia. He accumulated large collection of fossils. During his many years of work and experience in Těšín, the exploitation of argillaceous iron ores in the Beskydy Mountains and the operation of local ironworks were modernized and became more effective. He also took credit for the construction of the railway connecting Košice and Bohumín.
