Economic geologist and mining engineer, professor at the Mining Academy. In 1852, he studied natural science at the Polytechnic College in Prague attending classes of professor K.N. Balling and A.E. Reuss. In 1857, he left for the mining school to Příbram, where he became attracted by J. Grimm’s monograph 'O ložiskách' (On ore deposits). Since 1859, he worked as mining engineer at various shafts in Transylvania, Carinthia and the environs of Banská Štiavnica. Later he went on missions to Tyrol, Salzburg region, and North America (California, Nevada) to improve his geological and mining knowledge. In 1879 - 1888 he was the head of the Department of Economic Geology at Mining Academy in Příbram. He went on scientific missions to Germany, Switzerland, France, England, Norway, Sardinia, the Urals, Greece, and the Orient. Among his most outstanding works that achieved a worldwide recognition is 'The Genesis of Ore Deposits', first published in 1893 in the USA and again in 1902 with extensive remarks by renowned American economic geologists of that time. The work was translated into Czech by professor Ježek. The second important work is 'Das Goldvorkommen Böhmens und der Nachbarländer'. In addition to these monographs he published more than 100 other papers dealing with a number of important geological and mining localities. He is considered a pioneer of metallogenic studies.
