He completed his education in Munich, Banská Štiavnica, and Freiberg. Later he joined the civil service. In 1825, he was assigned to the court auditors sent to Jáchymov to investigate thoroughly the local mining and metallurgical operations. In 1830, he wrote the paper 'Geognostische Untersuchungen zur Bestimmung des Alters und der Bildungsart der Silber - und Kobaltgänge zu Joachimsthal' published in 'Abhandlungen der böhm. Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften'. Because of his scientific activities he was elected a member of this society (Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften) in 1831. In 1826, he was appointed mining counsellor and chairman of the Supreme Mining Office in Příbram, which supervised mining operations not only in Příbram but also in mining districts and operations in other places such as Stříbro, Kutná Hora, Rudolfov, Jílové u Prahy, Mladá Vožice, Kašperské Hory, and others. This ten-year activity resulted in a number of improvements in mining operations not only in the Příbram district but in the entire Bohemia. In 1831, he became an imperial and gubernatorial counsellor and, in 1837, he was called to Vienna and assigned to the Court Chamber for Mintage and Mining as court counsellor.
