Mineralogist, crystallographer, geologist, and professor. He studied natural science at the Mining Academy in Freiberg and at the Universities of Leipzig and Jena. In 1821 - 1822, he traveled through Norway and published the results of his studies in 'Beiträge zur Kenntnis Norwegens'. In 1823, he qualified as associate professor of mineralogy at the University of Jena, in 1824 was associate professor in Leipzig and, since 1826, full professor of crystallography and geology at the Mining Academy in Freiberg. In 1842 - 1871 he was professor of mineralogy and geology in Leipzig. His scientific activities include mainly the crystallographic studies as well as general and regional geology. He wrote a number of publications, most important being the textbooks 'Lehrbuch der Kristallographie', 'Elemente der theoretischen Kristallographie', 'Elemente der Mineralogie', and 'Lehrbuch der Geognosie.' He was in charge of the first geological mapping project of the Kingdom of Saxony and is co-author of numerous geological maps at a scale of 1 : 75 000, accompanied by explanatory notes.
