Mineralogist, geologist, university professor. He studied natural science at Charles University and the Czech College of Technology in Prague where he became assistant professor at the Geological Department in 1919, and later of the Geological Department of Charles University in Prague where he worked in this capacity till 1924. He earned a Doctorate in philosophy in 1921. In 1922, he joined the State Geological Survey as associate member and in 1924 as regular research worker, and stayed there till 1946. In 1925, he qualified as associate professor in geology at the Czech College of Technology and, at the same time, at Charles University. In 1931, he was assigned to a post of adjunct professor and in 1946 as full professor of geology at the Faculty of Science. While at the State Geological Survey he was involved in basic geological research and mapping of many regions of Bohemia and Slovakia. He studied the Bohemian Massif, especially the Barrandian, Železné hory Mountains, Chřiby Mountains, Bílé and Malé Karpaty Mountains (West Carpathians), the Beskydy Mountains, Malá and Velká Fatra Mountains. He also investigated the Neogene system in Lower Moravia, southern and eastern Slovakia. He published nearly 150 scientific papers, wrote numerous unpublished reports and expert opinions on engineering and economic geology. While at the university he compiled textbooks for the university and high school students and published papers advocating enviromental protection. In 1956, he received the degree Doctor of mineralogical and geological sciences.
