Czech geologist and teacher. He studied at the Mining Academy in Leoben (Styria), where he later became assistant and associate professor of mineralogy and geology. During his stay in Leoben he investigated mainly paleontology of the Styrian Tertiary. After the retirement of professor Pošepný in 1888, he started teaching at the Mining Academy in Příbram and later, following its reorganization, he became its first rector. He lectured on geology of mineral deposits as well as new subjects such as mineralogy, geology and paleontology. He participated in the foundation of new departments and completion of collections of minerals, rocks and mineral deposits. He stressed practical education of his students. He undertake numerous scientific and study journeys to Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, etc., bringing back a valuable mineralogical material. He enlarged the number of the Příbram minerals by description of witherite, berthierite, scheelite, microscopic stannite and cassiterite. He was the first to use photography in paleontological studies, and compiled a monograph 'Atlas der Leipflanzen palaeozoischer Steinkohlenablagerungen in Mitteleuropa'(1899, together with F. Ryba). He was member of many scientific societies. His contribution lies mainly in the knowledge of mineral deposits. He published, together with prof. Slavík, many papers dealing with gold-bearing ores. In Příbram he founded municipal museum and, together with prof. Ziegelheim, a society supporting destitute students at the Mining Academy in Příbram.
