He came from an old miners family living in Jáchymov. He was active as a prominent mining engineer at various mining enterprises in Hungary and Transylvania. In 1850, he became the second principal of the mining school, which later became the Mining Academy in Příbram where he taught geology and economic geology. He wrote a number of geological papers, in particular those dealing with mineral deposits. His 'Geognosie' (Geology) was translated into Czech by J. Krejčí. He was also an editor of the journal 'Jahrbuch der k.k. Bergakademien', which was published in Příbram. He enlarged considerably local school collections with a variety of minerals. He is buried in Horní Stupno near Břasy, next to the prominent representative of the Czech mining community Caspar, earl of Sternberg with whom he cooperated in scientific studies. František Pošepný belonged among his most prominent disciples.
