| Remeš, Mauric M.D. Dr. Dr.h.c.
Medical doctor, paleontologist and natural scientist. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna. After graduation (he earned a Doctorate in Medicine) he worked, for a short time, as general practitioner in Brno and Příbor. Since 1892, he first was house physician of the provincial hospital and maternity hospital, then general practitioner and, finally, chief doctor at the State Railway Headquarters in Olomouc. In 1931, he retired but remained active in research till his death. Since his youth he was interested in natural science, being influenced by his father, also a physician and collector of fossils. His father´s large collection of fossils stimulated his own collecting and scientific studies of fauna of the Jurassic of Štramberk and the Devonian of Čelechovice. His investigations of these localities include paleontology, stratigraphy and geology. Out of his important geological and paleontological papers the following should be quoted: 'Zbytky ještěra z vrstev veřovských' (The Remains of Saurian from the Veřov Beds, 1896), 'Jeskyně v devonském vápenci u Předmostí' (A Cave in the Devonian Limestone at Předmostí, 1901), 'Nachträge zur Fauna von Stramberg', 'Štramberský tithon' (Tithonian of Štramberk, 1904), 'Přehled zeměpisný a přírodovědecký okresu Příborského' (Geographical and Natural Scientific Survey of the Příbor district, 1917, together with Ferd. Pokorný), 'Čelechovský devon' (The Devonian of Čelechovice, 1923 with Radim Kettner), 'Pavlovské kopce' (Pavlovské kopce Hills, 1929), 'Příspěvky k balneologii Moravy a Slezska' (Contributions to Balneology of Moravia and Silesia, 1929), 'Dodatky ke geologické mapě okolí olomouckého a poznámky k některým listům sousedním' (Supplements to the Geological Map of the Olomouc environs and Notes on some adjacent map sheets, 1933), 'Z dějin přírodovědy na Moravě a ve Slezsku' (From the History of Natural Science in Moravia and Silesia). He is the author of the first Czech textbook on paleontology 'Úvod do všeobecné paleontologie' (Introduction to General Paleontology, together with J. Augusta 1936, 1947, 1956).
