Austrian geologist of Slovenian origin. He studied natural science in Vienna and concentrated mainly on geology,and petrography. In 1898, he became assistant lecturer of mineralogy and geology at the German College of Technology in Brno, but soon he left for the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna, where he worked as geologist. After 1919, he was assigned to a post of professor of mineralogy and petrography and later of geology at the newly established University of Ljubljana. His scientific studies were almost exclusively devoted to geology of Bohemia and Moravia, which he also mapped. He mainly investigated the region of the Českomoravská vrchovina Highland, Železné hory Mountains and their crystalline complex. He was associate member of the State Geological Survey of Czechoslovakia, and member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Art. Until his death he continued his studies of the Bohemian - Moravian Crystalline Complex and wrote a number of papers and compiled numerous geological maps. He accumulated a famous collection of marbles.
