Austrian geologist and paleontologist. He studied secondary school in Linz and natural science at the Vienna University. His main tutor of geology was Melchior Neumayr. In 1882, he earned a Doctorate in Philosophy in Vienna and, in 1884, became assistant of paleontology to Neumayr with whom he went to Greece to participate in excavations at Pikermi an important locality of Tertiary vertebrates. In 1885, he worked as trainee at the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna and, in 1892, became its superintendent. He took part in geological mapping of the western part of Galicia and Moravia (the environs of Hranice, Hustopeèe, Mikulov, and Brno). Besides unpublished reports on mapping he published various papers dealing with geology among which the most noted is 'Über die krystallinischen Schiefer und Massengesteine, sowie über die sedimentären Ablagerung nördlich von Brünn' (1895).
