Zepharovich, Viktor Prof., Dr., Ritter von
Mineralogist, geologist, and teacher. He studied at the Vienna University and the Mining and Forestry Academy in Banská Štiavnica. Between 1852 and 1857, he worked as geologist at the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna and mapped mainly the southwestern parts of Bohemia and the Šumava region. In 1857, he was appointed professor of mineralogy at the universities of Krakow, in 1861 of Graz, and in 1864 of Prague. Following the partition of the Prague University he joined the German University in Prague where he worked until his death. Since his appointment he devoted his time mainly to mineralogy and crystallography. He published numerous monographs on minerals of the Czech Lands, Hungary, and other foreign localities. He discovered and described many new mineral species. He also conducted crystallographic studies of synthetic chemical compounds. Among his larger monographs the following can be quoted: 'Mineralogisches Lexikon für das Kaisertum Österreich' in two volumes and 'Kristallographische Wandtafeln', published in 1877.
