Austrian geologist and mining engineer, supreme mining counsellor. He studied at secondary school and University of Vienna, was a student of E. Suess. In 1861, he joined the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna, where he was a trainee. In 1875 he was appointed mining counsellor, in 1883 he was chief geologist, and in 1895 became supreme mining counsellor. In 1873 - 1893 he was the editor of the periodical 'Verhandlungen' published by the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna. He worked in the Vienna Basin, Hungary, Bohemia, the Carpathians, Slovakia, Galicia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and the Bukowina region. In 1886 - 1893 he carried out geological mapping in Moravia and Silesia, later in Lower Austria. He published a number of books, the most important being 'Geologie der Bukowina' (1876), 'Karpathensandstein' (1877 a 1879), 'Beiträge zur Kenntniss des schlesischgalizischen Karpathenlandes' (1877), 'Der Karpathensandstein des mährisch - ungarischen Grenzebirges' (1890), 'Das Südwestende der Karpathen - Sandsteinzone (Marsgebirge und Steinitzer Wald in Mähren)' (1893), 'Wienerwald, nordalpine Flyschbild' (1898).
