| Hauer, Franz von Ritter
Austrian geologist and paleontologist. He studied at the Vienna University and in 1843 at the Mining and Forestry Academy in Banská Štiavnica. Since 1844, he worked at the Mining Museum in Vienna, he was assistant at mineral collections of the court chamber in Vienna. In 1849, he was assigned to a post of mining consultant and senior geologist of the Imperial Mining Institute in Vienna. In the years 1866 - 1885 he was in charge of this institute, and in 1886 the director of the Natural Scientific Court Museum in Vienna. He devoted his scientific studies to geology and paleontology of Austro-Hungary. Geological survey and publication of geological maps belonged among his important activities. His most important publications are: 'Geologische Uebersicht der Bergbau der österreichischen Monarchie', 'Geologie Siebenbürgens', 'Geologische Uebersichtskarte der österreichisch - ungarischen Monarchie', 'Geologische Karte von Österreich - Ungarn', 'Die Geologie und ihre Anwendung auf die Kenntnis der Bodenbeschaffenheit der österreichisch - ungarischen Monarchie'. In addition to these he published many other geological and paleontological papers.
