Sorption and desorption of Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn in the sedimentary rock environment

Abstract
With regard to the evaluation of the impact of the heavy metals (HMs) on the health of humans and animals, it is not the overall HMs-concentration in the environment that plays the major role, but rather their speciation. Only the mobile species can be transported from the soil or sediments to water, get incorporated in plants, and, eventually, also in animal and human bodies. The sorption and desorption processes taking place in the nature can be well simulated by the laboratory experiments, which also provide for a better understanding of the issue.
