Eocene corals of the genus Balanophyllia from the locality Skačany, Borová Formation (Sub-Tatras Group)
Abstract
My interpretation regarding the deeper sea depositional environment (lower sublittoral zone) is based on such facts as the presence of exclusively solitary corals, concomitant association of organisms and the lithological characteristic of the Borová Formation sedimentary column (calcareous claystones) at the locality of Skačany. It is not to be excluded however, that the corals lived perhaps even in the neritic zone with a temperature ol 5-10 °C and possible salinity fluctuation. The investigation of mentioned corals was complicated the considerably progressed recrystallization process of these. Acurate systematic classification is hardly possible but most of their features correspond with the genus Balanophyllia.
