Institute of Geology & Geography (IGG), Lithuania

The Institute of Geology & Geography is a governmental institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment. It is responsible for Regulation of use of subsurface according to the Underground Law, Research, and for Environment. IGG has a staff of 117 employees. IGG targets are organising and performing investigations of subsurface of territory of Lithuania (onshore and offshore), providing necessary knowledge on structure, state geological processes and resources of subsurface, hazardous natural phenomena and induced by human activity; regulation of use of resources, protection and investigations of subsurface according to its competency; collection and storage of the information on subsurface necessary to State, to manage this information as state property; to provide Government institutions, municipalities, and whole society with information, expertise and advises concerning the use and protection of subsurface.

IGG is heavily involved in reservoir characterization (oil fields, underground gas storage - evaluation of the hydrocarbon potential, petrophysical interpretations, processing and interpetation of seismic data, static and dynamic modelling of reservoirs) and studies of deep geological respositories for radioactive waste.
