Latvian Environment, Geology & Meteorology Agency (LEGMA)
Latvian Environment, Geology & Meteorology Agency (LEGMA) is a governmental institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment that, within its competence, regulates and safeguards the rational use of the subsoil and its supervision. The activities of SGSL are determined by the law “On the Subsoil”, Regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers issued in compliance with it, and other regulations in the environmental sphere.
Execution of tasks of national importance - preparation and issue of licences for the use of subsoil; co-ordination of the use of subsoil approval of mineral reserves; supervision of geological operations; acquisition and storage of geological information; preparation and publication of geological information for the needs of society; provision of geological information for the state; preparation of drafts of legal and administrative projects for the branch; investigations of the quality of the subsoil; geological and geoecological investigations of different hazards to the environment and population.
Preparation of specialised geological information aimed at the development of the national economy - preparation of packages of geological information for the economic development of concrete areas; preparation of evaluation summaries regarding minerals occurring and extracted in the land belonging to private persons; evaluation of the hydrocarbon potential, exploration and production possibilites – interpretation of log diagrams, seismic data processing etc.; preparation of petroleum geological information for oil companies and local bussinesses.
