National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS), Italy
OGS is a public research institute, with roots going back to the second half of 1700, financed by the Ministry of Education, University and Research. Its mission is to promote, co-ordinate and perform, also in collaboration with other national, international, and European institutions, studies and research on the Earth and its resources. These are related to:
applied geophysical and environmental disciplines
delineation and evaluation of mineral and energy resources, on land and at sea, and the development of environmentally friendly exploitation technologies
marine sciences, related in particular to the interaction of the oceans with the atmosphere and the lithosphere
seismicity, hydrodynamic and geodynamic phenomena having an impact on the environment and population, also for civil protection purposes
development of techniques for the acquisition, processing interpretation and storage of geophysical data
integration of research and capacity-building activities
The OGS activities are carried out by the four departments of Geophysics of the Lithosphere, Oceanography, Seismology, Development of Marine Technologies and Researches. The institute has offices in Trieste, Udine and Rome and a total staff of 173 employees (127 within research and development) and about 40 post-doctoral and research fellowships.
OGS co-ordinated or participated to more than 50 EU-funded research and demonstration projects in the fields of Energy, Environment and Marine Sciences. OGS is Member of the Marine Board of the European Science Foundation and held in 2001 the Chair of ENeRG, the European Network for Research in Geo-Energy. OGS contributes to several EU research projects on CO2 capture and storage: Castor (CO2 from capture to storage), INCA-CO2 (a Specific Support Action on the international collaboration in the field of C O2 sequestration), CO2 GeoNet (Network of Excellence on Geological Storage of CO2) and CO2 NET2.
At a national level, OGS was chosen as co-ordinator of Confitanet, a national research proposal on the CO2 Geological Sequestration, joining OGS, ENI-Agip, ENEA, INGV, CNR, 14 Universities and the Emilia Romagna Region.
