The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is the central geoscientific institution of the Federal German Government. It is a subordinate scientific organisation of the Federal Ministry of Economic and Labour. The BGR advises and informs the Federal Minstries on matters related to the economics of mineral resources and in geoscientific problems concerning environmental protection and conservation of resources. Commissioned by the Federal Government, BGR conducts projects at home and abroad, particular in developing countries. BGR also conducts research and development work in the field of applied geosciences and represents the Federal Republic of Germany on international geoscientific committees.

BGR’s CO2 sequestration actitivites comprises partnerships in the EU-funded research projects GESTCO, NASCENT, CO2STORE, and CASTOR as well as the membership in the network CO2GEONET. BGR gives relevant advice to the German parliament, the German government, and national industry organizations and individual entities.
