Established in 1888, GEUS is a research and advisory institute under the Danish Ministry for the Environment. The main mission of GEUS comprises provision of R&D and advisory services for government agencies, local authorities and private enterprises in Denmark as well as internationally. Key scientific areas include: ground water and surface water resources, petroleum resources and subsurface energy storage/disposal, raw materials and minerals resources, geological mapping of Denmark, Greenland and the Faeroe Islands, marine geology, environmental impacts assessment, and physical & electronic data storage for the Kingdom. Current staff is about 450, with some 200 holding academic degrees. Annual turnover is about DKK 225 million (c. 30 million Euro). GEUS has conducted research pertaining to geological storage of CO2 since 1993, being one of the European pioneers in this area. GEUS has led or contributed to a number of RTD projects, including:
Storage of CO2 in an aquifer at the Sleipner Field (SACS Phases Zero, 1 and 2)
Geological storage capacity in 8 EU countries (GESTCO, project manager)
CO2NET 1 & 2 (founding member of network and co-ordinator of RTD strategy activity)
Canadian enhanced oil production using CO2 (Weyburn Project)
Industry project on carbon capture (CCP, sub-project on aquifer storage)
Sleipner field monitoring and transfer of experience to onshore cases (CO2Store, co-ordinator of the 4 onshore site-specific activities)
Storage of CO2 in old gas storage structure at Ketzin near Berlin (CO2SINK, one of the 3 project initiators)
Involvement of new EU member countries in CO2 geo-storage (CASTOR, one of many activities)
In addition GEUS is actively engaged in a number of international forums including: IEA (Greenhouse Gas Programme, Oil and Gas Advisory Group, WPFF Task Force on Zero Emissions), European Commission and Parliament (expert workshops, evaluations, FEE - European Energy Foundation etc.), ENeRG - European Network for Research in Geo-Energy and CSLF - Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum.
