Natural scientist, secondary school teacher. He became famous and recognized for his mineralogical studies of the Písek environs (his birthplace) where he described numerous minerals published then in numerous periodicals and monographs. He concentrated on the investigation of the well-known feldspar (pegmatite) locality 'U obrázku' near Písek, which is rich in many accesory and secondary minerals, precious and semi-precious stones. He enlarged mineralogical collections of the museums in Písek and Prague with valuable mineralogical material. He studied and described some old gold mines in the environs of Písek and spent years on gold panning in the river Otava, also studying other accompanying minerals in gold-bearing sediments. He was active in entomology, physical education, and archaeology.
