Carnall, Rodolf von, Dr. Phil. h.c. born 9th February 1804, Glatz (now Klodzko, Poland), died 17th November 1874, Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland) Mining engineer, geologist. He studied at the university in Berlin and worked in a number of positions at the Prussian Mining Board in Upper Silesia, and Bonn (as Bergassesor, Oberbergrat, Berghauptmann). He initiated, together with L. von Buch, H. Beyrich and Gustav Rose, the foundation of the German Geological Society (Deutche Geologische Gesellschaft). His scientific activities were widespread, he was involved in mining engineering, mining in general and geology. He founded the periodical Zeitsschrift für Berg, Hütten u. Salinenwisen, where important papers on mining were published till 1945. At the same time he lectured at the university in Berlin where he earlier earned an equivalent of Ph.D. degree in 1855. Heinrich Rose named a new mineral species carnallite after him (hydrated chloride of K and Mg). |
