Katzer, Bedřich (Friedrich)
Geologist, paleontologist. He was assistant professor of geology at the College of Technology in Prague working with prof. Ot. Novák and Ot. Feistmantel and, for a short period of time, he also lectured at the Mining Academy in Leoben, Styria. In 1896, he became public geologist in Pará, Brasilia, and since 1898 up to his death worked in Sarajevo as public geologist for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and as head of provincial museum. His scientific papers covered a broad spectrum of earth scientific topics (geology, petrography, paleontology) related to the Bohemian Early Paleozoic. In 1855, he discovered, in the environs of his birth place, siliceous nodules called 'rokycanské kuličky' (little balls of Rokycany), which contained trilobites. In the supplement to his first volume of the 'Systęme silurien du centre de la Bohéme' J. Barrande named an importat trilobite from the environs of Rokycany, in honour of B. Katzer, Illaenus katzeri BARRANDE. In 1892, B. Katzer published a monograph 'Geologie von Böhmen', whose greatest value is in the fact that it provides results of all geological studies published in Bohemia up to that time. Results of his geological investigations in Brasilia were summarized in several papers. His geological and stratigraphic studies of ore and coal deposits are also of great importance. He concentrated on studies of the karst and glacial phenomena in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also compiled and published general geological maps of these countries.
