Teacher and popularizer. He studied medicine but spent his whole life on teaching, education and popularization. He was also interested in natural science. Together with K.S. Amerling he belonged among prominent promoters and reformers concerned with the purification of the Czech scientific terminology. In 1953, he cooperated on the compilation of the German-Czech dictionary of scientific terminology. He was active in hygienics and health education, very popular among school children was his paper on „Ten kinds of healthy suggestions“. He was also active in education of farmers having tried to apply science to agriculture when publishing manuals 'Lučba rolnická' (Chemistry in Agriculture), 'Rolník nového věku' (Farmer of the new era), and others.
