Comparison of actual and critical contents of cadmium, mercury and lead in top organic soils in the area of the Doupovské hory Mts.

Abstract

Risk elements Cd, Hg and Pb are potentially highly biotoxic. Data on contents of these elements, a total of 94 samples, in the top organic soils in the area of the Doupovské hory Mts. were collected in the framework of geological mapping at 1 : 25 000 scale. The contents of these elements are published in The Explanatory Notes to the geological map. They are compared with the maximum tolerable values in the soils by the Regulation of the Ministry of Environment No. 13/1994 Sb., related to the law on the protection of the agricultural land (334/92 Sb.). Another possible approach is to calculate the critical contents and the critical loads which are recommended in the International legal documents of the European Economic Commission of the United Nations.
Critical content elements which represent potential risks to plants and edaphon are calculated for 94 samples. The differences between the actual and the critical contents of Cd, Hg and Pb are shown in the grid maps. Exceedances of critical contents of cadmium are found only in three samples, the exceedances vary from 0.4 % to 1.2 ppm Cd. Exceedances of critical contents of mercury are found in four samples and they vary from 0.03 to 0.31 ppm Hg. The lead content is exceeded at 16 localities, there are greater exceedances on the acidic substrates than on the basic substrates. Exceedances range from 0.4 % to of 61.6 ppm Pb.
Two soil profiles were selected for the expression of changes in the content of elements with depth. One soil profile was done on a locality with basic substrate and the other one on an acid substrate. The contents of Hg and Pb usually decrease with profile depth and depend on the amount of soil organic matter and pH. Lead and mercury well-correlate well with the organic Ctot. But only the mercury in light sandy soils on acid substrates can pose an increased risk of the groundwater contamination.
