Abstract

A new project of International geological correlation programme (IGCP 518): "Fluvial sequences as evidence for landscape and climatic evolution in the Late Cenozoic" was launched in 2005. It builds upon the results of the former IGCP 449 and seeks to develop new themes like landscape and climatic evolution as evidenced from fluvial record. In the Euphrates valley the existence of six terraces Qf 0-Qf V correlating with those in Iraq was confirmed also in Turkey and in Syria. The basalt flows capping the fluvial deposits and dated by Ar-Ar method are of vital importance for stratigraphic classification.
