Abstract

Miocene quartzose sandstones hardened by silica cement on Salesius Hill near Osek were studied. On the largest quartzite cliff of "Letohrádek", shallow pits undoubtedly produced by wind abrasion were found. Faceted pits on inclined quartzite surfaces are elongated NW-SE, thereby indicating the prevailing northwesterly wind direction in the Pleistocene. Northerly directions were mostly presumed as dominent by previous authors for the Most Basin area. Lower parts of the 12 m high cliff, lacking eolian faceting, must have been protected from the wind, and were possibly still buried under the surface.
