Abstract

The type section of the Schrambach Formation in the locality of Schrambachgraben (4 km SSE of the town of Hallein) is exposed in the Schrambach stream. In the footwall of the Schrambach Formation, the Oberalm Formation occurs; in the overhanging wall the Rossfeld Formation is developed. In the lower part of the section, in the Oberalm Formation, cysts of dinoflagellates characteristic of both the uppermost Early (Diacanthum hollisteri, Systematophora areolata) and the Middle Berriasian (Achomosphaera neptunii, Dichadogonyaulax bensonii) occur. In view of the dinoflagellate cysts found, the stratigraphic range of the Schrambach Formation is from the Late Berriasian (FO Pseudoceratium pelliferum) to the upper part of the Early Valanginian (FO Dissiliodinium globulus, Cribroperidinium edwardsii). The Late Valanginian age of the Rossfeld Formation can be considered on the basis of the occurrences of species Bourkidinium sp. 1, Cymososphaeridium validum and Muderongia macwhaei.
