Environmental radioactivity in areas Budišov and Krucemburk – extremes in the Czech Republic

Abstract

Natural and nuclear fallout radiation has been measured in areas of Budišov and Krucemburk, Czech Republic, for a complex study of environmental parameters and their impact on human health in 2003. Concentration of natural radionuclides K, U and Th in rocks and nuclear fallout isotopes 137Cs and 134Cs was determined by ground gamma-ray spectrometry dynamic measurements at 101 traverses 300 m long, situated around 15 villages in 2003. Results indicate significant difference of mean concentrations 3.2 % K, 5.9 ppm eU 24,0 ppm eTh and dose rate 135 nGy/h in highly radioactive durbachites in the Budišov area, in comparison with 0.9 % K, 1.8 ppm eU, 4.2 ppm eTh and 33 nGy/h in Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, gabbros and metamorphic rocks in the vicinity of Krucemburk. 137Cs surface activity 2-7 kBq/m2 was monitored in both areas.
