Profesor Dr. Jiri Krupicka devadesatilety

Professor Krupička was born on 5 May 1913 in Prague Vinohrady. He earned his PhD degree from Charles University (in modern languages in 1937, then in geology in 1947). He and his wife Ada hve two daughters. He was teaching petrology at the Department of Geology of Charles University until 1950, studying the Proterozoic Jílové Zone and crystalline rocks of the Bohemian Massif. For his non-conform literary work, he was im-prisoned by the communists for 16 years, but was set free after the amnesty of 1960. After ten years in jail, especially at Leopoldov, Slovakia, he started his new geological activities in 1965 as a member of the Czech Geological Survey in Prague. But in 1968, after the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, he exiled to the Netherlands and then to Canada, where he became a professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton (until 1988). Since 1968 he has been active in anticomunist and exilian organisations, and, after the velvet revolution of 1989, he wrote five excellent books on his life experience and natural and philosophical prob-lems of our time. In 2001, he was awarded the Pen Club Prize for his life-long literary work.All his Czech geological friends wish him a good health and express their congratulations at the occasion of his great jubilee.
