Abstract

A fragment of right boviďs mandible was found in the Úpa River in 1997. The stratigraphic position is not clear, as the bone was found in the recent river channel. The mandible may have come from old caves located in the surrounding of Maršov and Svoboda nad Úpou or from older fluvial sediments. From morphological point of view the mandible belongs to Aurochs. The osteometrical data lie in the lower sector of the range for Aurochs living in Neolithic and Palaeolithic Age. The described jaw raust be from a small form of Aurochs or it is a female. Because only this sole mandible was found, and due to lack of available osteometrical data of bovid mandibles we are not able to draw definite conclusions yet.
