Results of preliminary study focused on the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin and its basement

Abstract

A preliminary study of amount and quality of geoligcal data from the area of the Bohemian Cretaceous basin and its crystalline basement has brought several sets of metadata and the summary of quantity and quality of geological documentation colected untill 2000 from the area studied. Two extensive data-bases ere taken as the basis for the summyry: the drilling logs recorded in the archive of Geofond of the Czech Republic, and the datasets of the former Czechoslovak Uranium Industry created by Diamo Stráž pod Ralskem. These two sets were merged together and complemented by data from the Czech Geological Survey, Aquatest Prague and Geological Service Chomutov. Type, depth and stratigraphy, geophysical drillhole measurements and access to the primary geological documentation were selected to characterize the main features of almost 250 thousand drill holes recorded. The most important synthetic studies and relevant references were evaluated by experts in hydrogeology, geology of Upper Palaeozoic, Cretaceous and Tertiary basins. An overview of unpublished geological studies and reports from the area, deposited in archives of the CGS, Diamo and geofond, is summarized in the tabelar form. The detailed description of all the samples from the crystalline basement, preserved from the stage of geological exploration for uranium 1950-1996, has been provided within the study. A set of 40 000 thin section from geological survey carried out by Geoindustria Prague in 1960-1995 was transferred to the archive of CGS. The results presented in the preview and editable versions on the CD-rom provide an essential material for the formulation of a project focused on 3-D imaging of geological structure of the Bohemian Cretaceous basin and its basement units.
