Abstract

The Žandov quarry in northern Bohemia exposes Paleogene basanites of the České středohoří Volcanic Complex. Pyroclastic deposits observed at the base of the quarry increase their thickness northwards rapidly forming a steep slope of a pyroclastic cone as documented by geophysical and borehole data. Angular hypocrystalline fragments document hydroclastic fragmentation during Surtseyan type eruption. Tuff cone formed by this eruption was later buried by basanitic lava. Recent deformations in the quarry are caused by sliding of thin remnant of the lava on the steep slope of a tuff cone.
